Fire Capital is proud to announce that we are officially a Certified B Corporation (B Corp for short)! B Corps are certified by the nonprofit, B Lab, and meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It is a growing movement of people using business as a force for good. Unlike traditional corporations, B Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders (e.g., workers, suppliers, the community, customers, and the environment).
Essentially, B Corp is to business what LEED certification is to green buildings and what Certified Organic or Fair Trade is to food or coffee. But to us, it’s much more than just a certification. From the very start of Fire Capital, we aspired to be a B Corp. We continually seek to build a company that is in line with our own values. At Fire Capital, we aim to attract great people who also care about embedding sustainability and impact into our business and investment practices. Obtaining, and ultimately maintaining, our B Corp status affirms our commitment to consider the impact of our business decisions to all our stakeholders. It will also keep us accountable and encourage us to improve year after year.
We are excited to be a part of the growing B Corp community! There are now over 4,000 Certified B Corps in over 74 countries across 150 industries. As seen in the B Corp numbers, any company, regardless of industry, can take action to make positive changes in the world in ways that are correlated to their business. However, certification is a rigorous process, requiring nearly a year of our effort to complete. Part of this process included completing an internal impact audit and several rounds of verification.
During certification, Fire Capital is provided a score. Part of this score is directly tied to the value we provide to our stakeholders - the more value we provide, the higher we score. At Fire Capital, our B Corp philosophy for providing value to our stakeholders is woven into all that we do. For example, we have implemented a strong sustainability policy that informs our investment processes, pledged 1% of our annual revenue to causes that we care about, and continue to offer great employee benefits. For our clients, we seek to drive capital toward social and environmental good from the way our clients invest to the way they give.
We hope that eventually all businesses will be more intentional about balancing purpose and profit and will carefully monitor how their business affects people and the planet. We believe the chance to make a difference long-term exists through our collective impact: person by person, company by company.
With the support and guidance of the B Corp framework as a starting point, we challenge ourselves to conduct business in a way that betters the planet, communities, and people we work with. We look forward to sharing our journey with you over the years to come….we’re just getting started!
